Subject description


The requirements and conditions are adopted from the Rules on testing and grading the knowledge of students at UL FS. The students are specifically advised to participate at the lectures in the maximum extent possible, with at least 80 % presence at the auditorium exercises and 100 % presence at the laboratory exercises (any authorised absence is substituted by additional obligations in scope of the laboratory exercise).

The condition for admission to exam are executed obligations according to the exam rules, presented at the beginning of the lectures.

Content (Syllabus outline):

  • Introduction, overview and the scope of process engineering, the role of process engineering in sustainable development;
  • Thermal process engineering, evaporation; distillation, rectification, separating binary and multi-component mixtures, separating azeotropes; NTU and HTU;
  • Absorption, adsorption, extraction, crystallization, drying, lyophilization;
  • Membrane technology, micro-, ultra- and nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, ion exchange;
  • Bioprocess engineering, bioreactors, bioreactor heating, cooling and sterilization, controlling and monitoring batch and continuous processes;
  • The transfer of process technologies from small to large scale and from large to small scale, assessing and evaluating process systems, lifecycle analysis and exergy analysis of process systems;
  • Process environmental engineering, economical, environmental and social indicators of sustainable development, code of engineering ethics, standards, recommendations and best practices;
  • Advanced technologies, microelectronic mechanical systems, microreactors and nanotechnologies in process engineering;
  • Presentation of the project part of Process engineering course. 

Objectives and competences:

The course objective is to equip the students with the fundamental knowledge in the field of process engineering, to strengthen the competences for using the engineering tools to solve the problems of process engineering, as well as to consolidate the engineer's research-based approach to their solving. The students will earn competences in the field of process engineering and process technologies. They will learn and understand the basics of process engineering and attain a fundamental knowledge in the field of environmental process engineering. The knowledge about thermal process engineering will qualify the students for an active role in the development of new process technologies and equipment, as well as for managing, evaluating and improving industrial process systems.
