Formula Student is the biggest competition for engineering students in the world. Each year, students use their knowledge, experience and the support of their universities and their sponsors to create a race car and compete with it. The Superior Engineering – Formula Student Team Ljubljana, composed of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering students, participated in three large European competitions in this year’s season.

Formula Student Netherlands Competition – from 17 to 20 July 2017

The students used Minka, the previous season’s formula, to compete in the Netherlands. The race car successfully passed all roadworthiness testing, and was used without difficulty to perform in all the dynamic disciplines of the competition. In the common classification of the competition, the team won 2nd place in the category of internal combustion engines and 5th place (internal combustion engines and electric motors).

The following results were achieved in the dynamic portion of the competition:
Endurance: 4th place (2nd place in the category of internal combustion engines)
Efficiency: 2nd place (least fuel spent among all race cars)
Auto Cross: 8th place (1:01.308, 5th place in the category of internal combustion engines)
Skid Pad: 11th place (5.816 sec; 6th place in the category of internal combustion engines)
Acceleration: 14th place (4.290 sec; 9th place in the category of internal combustion engines)

Formula Student Hungary Competition – from 17 do 20 August 2017

The team took on the race with the Griffin race car and achieved outstanding results. In the category of internal combustion engines they achieved the highest result in acceleration and 14th place in the common dynamic disciplines. The event organisers opted to leave out the Endurance and autoX categories of the competition, which means that the points achieved in them did not go towards the final result. Driver Luka Sinobad, however, achieved the best time in the autoX category in the category of internal combustion engines.

Every year, the team gains new experiences through participating in these competitions and thus sets ever higher goals for the competitions to follow. They are already making new plans for the following year, in designing and building the first Slovene student formula with an electric motor.
