At the Innovation Days, members of the Laboratory for Machining, Luka Sterle, Damir Grguraš and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Franci Pušavec, received the golden award from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (the Chamber of Central Slovenia) for the innovation of SingleCRYOlub. They have developed a single-channel system, which increases the tool life by more than 100% and offers near-dry machining. At the event, which took place on 21 June 2018 at the City Hall in Ljubljana, 7 golden, 2 silver and 7 bronze awards were presented.

The innovators have already proven numerous advantages of cryogenic machining over conventional machining, such as cutting processing costs, better quality of treated pieces, cleaner and more secure technology. In the field of manufacturing engineering, an alternative to the conventional cutting oils and emulsions is being developed. These fluids represent a major ecological, economic and health problem. The use of liquid carbon dioxide (LCO₂) in combination with a minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) represents an alternative for tool cooling and lubricating during machining. LCO₂ and MQL are usually delivered to the tool via two separate channels in the tool, using a double-channel system.

The developed innovation offers a single-channel system to deliver LCO₂ and lubrication fluid. This allows precise consumption control over both media, use of simpler and cheaper tools and a more economical solution. The use of this innovation increases the tool life by more than 100% and offers near-dry machining. It also eliminates purchase, maintenance and disposal costs of the conventional cutting fluids.
