On Wednesday, 5th December, 2018, the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, Prof Dr Igor Papič, presented the Prešeren Awards to the students of the University of Ljubljana. This is the 69th generation of students, whose works reflect individuality, originality and scientific excellence.

The student of mechanical Engineering Materj Senegačnik received the Prešeren Award of the University of Ljubljana for his work titled Laser-induced modification of metal surfaces on micrometer and submicrometer scale. The work was supervised by Assist Prof Dr Peter Gregorčič from the Laboratory for laser techniques of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the UL.

Assist Prof Dr Luca Lovrečić in her address to the students offered a few words of advice: "Do not be satisfied with the offered answers, but step across the boundaries of the known with zeal and a critical eye. Take an active role in your career path and create your own future."

About the work

In his work Matej Senegačnik explained, experimentally and theoretically, how different treatment parameters influence the chemical and topographical characteristics of micrometric and nanometric structures, which are created by interaction between laser light and matter. The results are an important contribution to the development of the new research field, known as laser surface modification. He has published 1 scientific article and 3 conference papers, and has received an award for the best lecture at an international conference.
