Review on compression heat pump systems with thermal energy storage for heating and cooling of buildings

Heat pumps are considered to be easy to use, but at the same time, they can use low-temperature (renewable) heat sources (such as air, water, earth, solar energy and waste heat). This reduces dependence on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. Their great advantage is the possibility of use for heating as well as for cooling, they can also be set in simultaneous mode. This means that almost no energy goes into the surroundings, making such systems truly efficient. However, in order to fully exploit their potential, it is necessary to install heat storage tanks so that their operation will be as even as possible and thus also economical.

Therefore, the article discusses different types of heat pump systems for heating and cooling of buildings, which have built-in heat accumulators, namely water, ground, phase-changing materials and ice banks. The focus of the research was on the impact of the implementation of heat accumulators on the operation of the system and on energy/cost efficiency.
