Temperature dependent model of platinum fuel cell catalyst degradation

Researches from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering University of Ljubljana have in collaborations with the researchers from the National Institute of Chemistry published a paper in one of the leading journals from the field of electrochemistry and energetics: Journal of Power Sources (IF=9.127).

In the paper the authors present an innovative mathematico-physical model of coupled degradation mechanisms in catalyst layer of hydrogen fuel cells, which via dissolution and agglomeration of platinum nanoparticles lead to the decrease in electrochemically active catalyst surface area. The authors for the first time introduce the temperature dependence of individual mechanisms in a physically consistent way, which enables the use of the model for describing the degradation of different types of fuel cells at different operating temperatures.
