
The new construction project for the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana has received the DGNB Gold Pre-Certification—one of the most rigorous and internationally recognised certifications in the field of sustainable construction. The pre-certificate award confirms the high standards of sustainable design, energy efficiency and responsible resource management that have been incorporated into the development of the new UL Faculty of Mechanical Engineering building.
The new UL Faculty of Mechanical Engineering building is one of the most significant development investments made by the Faculty and the University. The new building will provide state-of-the-art facilities for educational, research and development activities. It will offer students, researchers and staff a high-quality environment in which to work and learn.
The facility will be located within the Brdo Biotechnical Centre and will be designed to serve as a modern research and educational centre. The architectural design is based on the concept of interconnected horizontal planes, which create an open and flexible interior. The northern part of the building will be used for classrooms, while the southern part will house research laboratories. The central atrium will be a hub for collaboration and knowledge exchange among students, researchers and industry partners.
The DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) certification system is widely regarded as one of the world’s most comprehensive sustainable building assessment systems. The assessment considers the environmental, economic, technical, functional and social aspects of a building throughout its entire life cycle. The Gold Pre-Certificate confirms that the new UL Faculty of Mechanical Engineering building project has been designed in accordance with the highest international standards for sustainable construction.
Construction of the new building is scheduled to begin in 2026 and is expected to be completed by 2029. Receiving the DGNB Gold Pre-Certificate is a significant international endorsement of the project’s quality. It also marks another step towards creating a modern research and educational environment for future generations of mechanical engineers.
