We are pleased to announce that the consortium of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana (Laboratory for Modeling of Elements and Structures, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Robert Kunc) and the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Architecture at the University of Maribor (Center for Traffic Infrastructure, Prof. Dr. Tomaž Tollazzi) has won the international PIARC (World Road Association) tender for the project “Motorcycle Protection Systems & Safety Aspects of Traffic Management for Motorcycles.”

As part of the project, we will contribute to the analysis and development of new technical solutions to improve motorcycle safety. We will focus on:

✅ Technical improvements to safety systems:

  • Impact buffers for motorcyclists
  • Protection for the upper edge of road barriers
  • New designs for terminal elements of steel safety barriers

✅ New traffic arrangements for motorcyclists:

  • Dedicated lanes for motorcyclists
  • Shared lanes for public transport
  • Special spaces in front of traffic lights for motorcyclists

The project is primarily aimed at low- and middle-income countries (LIC & MIC), where motorcycles are the main mode of transportation, but their safety is often overlooked.
