On February 10, 2025, University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, through the Laboratory of Measurements in Process Engineering LMPS, obtained the DI status for the field of gas flow rate and speed metrology. In connection with the Metrology Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (MIRS) and other NNEs, we thus form the key infrastructure of the national metrology system.
Scientific excellence, the best measurement capabilities (CMCs), support for users from technology and science in the most demanding measurements, transfer of metrological traceability and knowledge, international research cooperation, international comparability of measurements are some of the key characteristics and challenges of the NNE. Currently, the LMPS laboratory has accredited CMCs in the field of designation for flow rates of various gases in the measurement range from 1 mL/min to 900 L/min or 1.2 mg/min to 1060 g/min and air speeds in the measuring range from 0.3 m/s to 40 m/s (Slovenian accreditation, LK-015).

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jože Kutin, Head of LMPS said: “I am proud of this achievement and of the LMPS laboratory team. Fulfilling the conditions and being appointed as the DI means recognition for the quality and breadth of our activities in the field of metrology. At the same time, it brings many challenges and opportunities, both in terms of the further development of the laboratory as well as in terms of our scientific and professional work in the domestic and international environment. Current challenges in the field of flow metrology are metrology infrastructure and management of flow measurements of energy and emission gases (hydrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.), liquefied gases, measurements under dynamic conditions. In the field of speed metrology, there are current challenges regarding the international comparability of measurements and measurements of low air speeds. These are also the key topics of our international collaborations and research projects that take place within the framework of EURAMET and the EPM European Partnership on Metrology (Horizon Europe).”
