Project title: Advanced simulation models to boost performance of Regenerative Fuel Cell Systems
Type of project: International Project
Role: Contractor
Financing: European Space Agency ESA
Duration: 1.1.2025 – 30.09.2025
Laboratory: Laboratory for Internal Combustion Engines and Electromobility LICeM
Project description:
Regenerative fuel cells are key to space exploration, offering lightweight, high energy density power solutions that can operate reliably in extreme environments and on long-duration missions. By breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen and recombining these gases, they form a closed system that efficiently stores and generates electricity. To achieve all key performance indicators while reducing development cycles and costs, it makes sense to use advanced modelling tools, including those developed at LICeM.
In the framework of the project “De-risk Advanced simulation models to boost performance of Regenerative Fuel Cell Systems (RFCS)”, these advanced modelling tools will be extended to RFCS modelling, ensuring bi-directional consistency between lower and higher scales and different domains within RFCS, thus playing an indispensable role in the design, development and optimisation of RFCS in space applications.
