From 22 to 25 September 2026, the Technical Museum of Slovenia in Bistra pri Vrhniki will once again host the traditional Mechanical Engineering Days, organised in partnership with the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Through live demonstrations, experiments and student projects, visitors will discover the many sides of modern mechanical engineering and get a closer look at some of the research and technologies being developed at the Faculty.
The programme gives young visitors a chance to explore different areas of mechanical engineering, meet researchers and students, and take part in a range of hands-on activities. They will be able to try a virtual welding simulator, experience a flight simulator based on a six-degree-of-freedom Stewart platform, watch a collaborative robot engrave objects, and discover how fibre lasers and infrared thermography are used in engineering.
Other demonstrations will explore preloaded bolted joints, material strength, tribology, lubrication and nanotechnology. Visitors will also have the opportunity to take the controls of hydrogen-powered RC cars and see first-hand how hydrogen can be used as an energy source.
Two successful student teams will showcase their work as well. Superior Engineering develops an electric race car for international Formula Student competitions, while the DBF Edvard Rusjan Team designs and builds unmanned aircraft for the international Design/Build/Fly competition.
“With Mechanical Engineering Days, we want to introduce young people to the world of modern mechanical engineering and show them that engineering is not simply about machines and mechanics. It is about ideas, creativity and finding solutions to the challenges of the future. Experiences like these can spark curiosity and perhaps inspire young people to develop new technologies of their own one day,” says Prof. Jernej Klemenc, PhD, Dean of the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
Mechanical Engineering Days are primarily aimed at pupils in the final three years of primary school and secondary school students. Through accessible, interactive demonstrations, the event offers young people an opportunity to discover what mechanical engineering is all about and learn more about studying and pursuing a career in the field.
On Sunday, 27 September 2026, Mechanical Engineering Days will also be open to the general public. Visitors can attend with a regular admission ticket to the Technical Museum of Slovenia.
