A student of the first-cycle higher-education study programme MECHANICAL ENGINEERING – Project Oriented Applied Programme completes their studies with the defence of their final paper – thesis.

Registration of thesis topic:

A student must submit the registration of the thesis topic to the VIS system. The topic must be approved by the chairperson of the competent thesis committee at least one month before the submission of the thesis. When registering the topic for the thesis, a student must enter:

  • the title of the thesis in the Slovenian and English languages,
  • the mentor and any co-mentor,
  • a synopsis of the thesis of 1000–1500 characters (definition of the topic to be dealt with, the purpose and goals of the thesis, foreseen methods of work),
  • the field of the thesis, and
  • any cooperation with a company.

If a student intends to produce their thesis in cooperation with a company, the student must sign a Contract on the acknowledgement of intellectual property rights upon thesis production in cooperation with a company (SI; EN). The wording of the contract shall not be amended. The contract may only be supplemented with the contact details of the parties to the contract, with Appendix 1 completed.

The proposed topic of the thesis must be grammatically correct and clearly define: the technical issue to be dealt with, the scope of work to be performed by the candidate within the foreseen period, and the methodology to be used for resolving the task.

When the topic of the thesis has been approved, a record of the approved thesis topic is created in the VIS system (Completion of studies/Certificate of approved topic) for the student. A student must obtain the signature of the mentor/co-mentor and insert the signed thesis topic as page 2 of their thesis.

Thesis submission

When a mentor gives their consent to thesis submission in the VIS system, the student sends their thesis by email (studentski.referat@fs.uni-lj.si) to the Student Affairs Office. The latter forwards the thesis to the Thesis Quality Review Committee, which reviews the thesis and informs the student of any corrections. When the student supplements their thesis in line with the corrections provided by the Committee, they may submit the thesis to the VIS system. After that, the similarity of the thesis content is checked against other papers using content similarity software linked with the VIS system.

A student must submit the thesis to the VIS system within 6 months of topic approval. If a student fails to complete the thesis within six months of topic approval, they must submit to the Student Affairs Office an application for the extension of the thesis submission deadline.

If a student, despite an extended submission period, fails to complete the thesis in due time for justifiable reasons, they may submit to the Student Affairs Office an application for a further extension of the thesis submission deadline. The student’s application will be considered by the Senate of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Thesis defence

The thesis is graded at the thesis committee. That day, the date of the defence is also published on the website of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

On the day of the defence, a student brings to the Student Affairs Office one copy of the thesis, which includes a signed thesis topic and Consent upon the completion of studies.

The presentation of the thesis defence must be made in PowerPoint format in the published template: SI template/EN template. If the PowerPoint format gives you any problems with local characters, you can upload to the computer the attached fonts:
