For many decades, nickel-based superalloys have been of scientific interest because of the need for more innovative and newer design solutions in the aviation, aerospace, energy, chemical industry, automotive, and many others. In the last 20 years, the developments in additive manufacturing have caused increased efforts around the world to apply this breakthrough technology to the production of parts made of nickel-based superalloys. One of the most popular processes used for additive manufacturing of nickel-based superalloys is laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF). The challenges regarding the use of LPBF for manufacturing components for high temperature applications will be discussed.  Particular attention will be paid to the processing-microstructure-property relationship. As a case study, the multiscale characterization of the microstructure of the Inconel 625 superalloy additively manufactured by LPBF and its evolution during long-term high-temperature exposure will be provided.

Beata Dubiel is an associate professor in the Faculty of Metals Engineering and Industrial Computer Science, Department of Metal Forming and Metallurgical Engineering at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland. She has received Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Science degrees in Materials Science at AGH. She is an expert in characterization of microstructure and properties of alloys, metal matrix composites and coatings. Her main field of research is examination of the processing-microstructure-property relationship in alloys and metal-matrix composites. With her research group she conducts research into the development of additive manufacturing of metal alloys by laser-assisted powder bed fusion.
